People expect online account opening to be instant. You fill a form, upload files, complete verification and wait. Often, it moves quickly. But sometimes, a demat application remains in “pending” status.
Usually, one detail in your documents does not match the detail entered in the form.
For a new investor, this can feel confusing. Most delays are avoidable once you know what is checked.
A demat account stores your securities electronically. Because financial assets are involved, the Depository Participant must confirm that the applicant is genuine.
When you open a demat account online, the platform verifies your PAN, address, bank account, photograph, signature and KYC details. These checks help prevent wrong account creation and settlement errors.
A delay does not always mean rejection. It means the provider needs a clearer document, corrected details or additional confirmation.
This is one of the most common problems. A PAN card may show “Rohit Kumar Mehta”, while Aadhaar may show “Rohit K Mehta”. Surnames may change after marriage, or initials may replace full names.
Enter your name exactly as it appears on your PAN. PAN is a key record for investment verification in India. Do not use pet names, short forms or casual spellings.
If your documents have different versions of your name, check whether the broker allows supporting proof. If the difference is major, update the incorrect record first.
A PAN has ten characters. One wrong letter or number can stop the system from matching your record. Even typing it wrongly can delay approval.
Image quality also matters. If the PAN card is blurred, cut from one side or covered by glare, the verification team may not accept it.
Before submitting, check these points:
● The PAN number is typed correctly.
● Your full name is readable.
● The date of birth is visible.
● The image is not cropped.
● The card is not hidden by reflection or shadow.
Many applicants use their current rented address in the form but upload Aadhaar with an old family address. Others use a permanent address in one place and a communication address in another.
The address proof should clearly support the address you enter. Accepted proof may include Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving licence, bank statement or utility bill.
If your address has changed, update your proof before applying, or use a valid document that shows the address you want to register.
Your demat account is linked to your bank account for payouts, refunds, dividends and other transactions. So, the bank proof must show that the account belongs to you.
Problems happen when people upload a bank statement where the name is hidden, a cancelled cheque without the account holder’s name, or a dark passbook image.
Using someone else’s bank account is another issue. For an individual demat account, the linked bank account should generally belong to the same person.
Online applications may ask for a signature image, live photo or selfie. Poor quality can lead to rejection.
A signature written with a faint pen, captured on a ruled page or cut from the edges may not work. A selfie may fail if the face is blurred, covered or too dark.
Use a plain white sheet for the signature. Take the photo in good light. Keep the background simple. Small improvements here can save resubmission.
If you only want a basic demat account, income proof may not be needed. Additional financial documents can become relevant when you request access to segments such as F&O, where the intermediary may need to verify financial eligibility before activating the segment.
Depending on the applicable requirements, supporting proof may include a salary slip, bank statement, income tax return acknowledgement, Form 16 or net worth certificate. If the required proof is missing or cannot be verified, the demat account may still open while the requested trading segment remains inactive.
Sometimes the document is right, but the upload is wrong. Common mistakes include:
● Uploading a password-protected PDF.
● Selecting the wrong document type.
● Uploading only the front side when both sides are required.
● Sending a file that is too large.
● Uploading a screenshot instead of the original document.
● Leaving important corners outside the image.`
Keep the main documents for the demat account opening ready before you begin.
● PAN card with clear details.
● Valid address proof.
● Bank proof showing account number, IFSC and name.
● Signature on plain white paper.
● Recent photo or selfie, if asked.
● Income proof, if activating certain trading segments.
● Nominee details, including guardian details for a minor nominee.
First, read the rejection or pending reason carefully. Do not upload the same file again unless it was accidental. If the message says “name mismatch”, check every document. If it says “bank proof unclear”, upload a clearer statement, cheque or passbook page.
If the reason is not clear, contact customer support with your application number. A specific query usually works better than a general complaint.
A delayed demat application is frustrating when you are ready to start investing. But in most cases, the problem is not complicated. It is usually a mismatch, unclear scan, old address, incomplete bank proof or upload error.
Before you open a demat account online, spend a few minutes checking every field and file. Clean documents, matching details and readable uploads make approval smoother and help you begin investing with fewer interruptions.
