In a recent development, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has designated 76 advocates as senior advocates, effective from October 16, 2025, under Section 16(2) of the Advocates Act, 1961. Among other names, is Advocate Mandeep Singh Sachdev- Jalandhar’s famous advocate known for his immense contribution in high profile cases.
The official notification was issued on October 20. It marks the first such designations since 2021 and follows a rigorous selection process that saw 210 applications submitted in 2024.
The Supreme Court's ongoing litigation on senior advocate designations had caused the procedure to be delayed, but after discussions, a committee cleared 64 candidates, and the full court approved another 12. With this action, the high court now has almost 300 senior attorneys in total.
Catering to the women, at least five advocates have been promoted, Puneet Kaur Sekhon, Monica Chhibber, Puja Sharma (Puja Chopra), Divya Sharma, and Promila Nain marking a step towards greater gender representation in the senior bar.
