Chandigarh’s sector roads to get major makeover as Rs 24-crore revamp plan kicks off

The city’s lifeline roads that divide its sectors, known as V-3 roads, are all set for a much-needed upgrade

The city’s lifeline roads that divide its sectors, known as V-3 roads, are all set for a much-needed upgrade as the Chandigarh Administration has rolled out a comprehensive recarpeting and repair project worth around Rs 24 crore.

The initiative, led by the UT Engineering Department, marks the first large-scale overhaul since these arterial roads were transferred from the Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction to the administration earlier this year. The decision was taken to streamline road maintenance and ensure faster execution of development works.

According to senior officials, the tender process has already begun, covering several major corridors across the city, including stretches between Sectors 31 and 47, 48 to 49, and the southern belt from Sectors 52 to 61. These roads—vital for inter-sector movement—have been showing visible signs of wear over the past few years due to increased traffic load and delayed maintenance.

Once tenders are finalized, the work will begin in phases to avoid traffic disruptions, with an expected completion timeline of early next year. “We are focusing on durable surfacing and smoother driving experience,” said an engineering official involved in the project. “Roads connecting the outer sectors, where damage has been the worst, will be prioritized.”

The initiative follows widespread complaints from commuters and residents who have been grappling with deteriorating surfaces, water stagnation, and uneven lanes. Many daily users said they welcomed the move but hoped the quality of work would match the scale of the budget. “We’ve seen patchwork repairs come and go—this time we need a permanent solution,” said a resident of Sector 46.

"The project is expected to include complete resurfacing, new road markings, and improved drainage where required. Officials are also considering night-time work schedules to minimize inconvenience during peak hours", said concerned officials, adding that beyond improving mobility, the facelift is being seen as a step towards restoring Chandigarh’s reputation as the “City Beautiful,” whose original urban design was based on clean lines, symmetry, and well-maintained infrastructure.
