Haryana ADGP allegedly shoots himself at Chandigarh Home; probe underway

Senior Haryana police officer identified as Y. Puran Kumar, serving as ADGP, was found dead at his residence in Chandigarh’s Sector 11 on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Haryana police officer identified as Y. Puran Kumar, serving as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), was found dead at his residence in Chandigarh’s Sector 11 on Tuesday afternoon. Officials said the 2001-batch IPS officer had allegedly shot himself, though the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

The incident came to light around 1:30 pm when a call alerted the police about gunfire at House No. 116, Sector 11. Teams from the Chandigarh Police and Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) rushed to the spot. “It is an extremely sensitive case. Every angle — personal and professional — is being examined,” said SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, while addressing the media.

Preliminary findings suggest the officer was in a soundproof basement room when the incident occurred. His teenage daughter, who was at home, is believed to have discovered him after hearing a noise. A firearm, suspected to be his service revolver, was recovered from the scene. Police said no suicide note had been found so far.

At the time, his wife, Amneet P. Kumar, a senior IAS officer posted with the Haryana government, was in Japan on an official delegation accompanying Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. She is now returning to India.

Senior officials from both Haryana and Chandigarh administrations reached the residence shortly after the news broke. The body has been sent for post-mortem at Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, while forensic experts are examining ballistic and digital evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events.

A 2001-batch IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, Y. Puran Kumar had served in several important policing assignments and was regarded as a disciplined and composed officer. His sudden death has sent shockwaves across the state’s police and administrative circles.

Police officials said that the investigation is underway and that further action will be taken based on the statements of family members and forensic findings. They added that all aspects of the case are being examined to establish the sequence of events leading to the officer’s death.
