Fans can now officially celebrate Diljit Dosanjh Day, at least in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles City Council has declared 6 January 2027 as “Diljit Dosanjh Day.” The Punjabi singer, who is currently in the US for his Dil-Luminati Tour, was presented with the resolution by Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez on 19 June for his significant contributions to Punjabi music and expanding South Asian representation in mainstream American culture.
His team shared this information with an Instagram post captioned “BIG NEWS”. Diljit Dosanjh received a framed copy of this resolution in an informal meeting where he appeared very emotional and in sheer gratitude. Diljit was visibly moved and dressed in traditional attire while receiving the resolution. On his Instagram post he also shared that it felt like a surreal moment for him. Los Angeles holds a special place in Diljit’s career
Diljit was honoured with this resolution for his Global Cultural Impact and breaking linguistic and cultural barriers to introduce Punjabi heritage to millions of mainstream American listeners. Another major reason was that he had performed at iconic venues such as the Crypto.com Arena, creating unforgettable moments for his fans. He also made history by becoming the first Punjabi artist to host an Apple Music Takeover from the company’s studios in Los Angeles
January 6, 2027, was specifically chosen because it marks the artist's 43rd birthday. Wearing a white kurta, pink pants and his trademark turban, the singer appeared emotional while receiving the recognition. In one of the clips, he was seen greeting everyone with folded hands and humbly bowing his head in appreciation. Reacting to the honour, he said, "My day? I'm speechless, actually. Thank you so much!". With this proclamation, Diljit Dosanjh joins a rare list of celebrated Indian classical and contemporary maestros—such as Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal—who have had dedicated celebratory days declared in American cities.
Shreya Ghoshal was honored by the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, which proclaimed June 26 as "Shreya Ghoshal Day" in 2010 during her North American concert tour. The recognition celebrated her remarkable contribution to Indian music and her popularity among the Indian diaspora in the United States. Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has received similar civic honors in the United States during his performances and cultural outreach programs. Several American cities have issued proclamations recognizing his contributions to Indian classical music and cultural exchange, celebrating his role in promoting the sarod and Indian musical traditions on the global stage.
