Some rivalries in the music industry do not need a fresh controversy to make headlines. Sometimes, one innocent question is enough to bring years of history rushing back. That is exactly what happened when rapper Badshah appeared on Samay Raina’s India’s Got Latent.
During the conversation, Samay asked Badshah, “Aapko yeh naam kisne diya?” The rapper immediately replied, “Maine hi diya hai.” It could have ended there, but Samay’s next line changed everything: “Maine toh koi aur story suni hai.”
Suddenly, a simple question about a stage name became a reminder of Badshah’s complicated history with Honey Singh.
Badshah’s Old Version Tells a Different Story
Samay’s reaction stood out because Badshah himself had spoken about the origin of his name years ago. In an earlier account, he had said that Honey Singh had given him the name “Badshah”, referring to the way he used to do things according to his own will. He elaborated in the interview that Honey Singh said you live like a king, Pickup calls whenever you wish, so from then he went with Badshah as his artist name.
That version placed Honey Singh somewhere in the story behind the identity that eventually became one of Indian hip-hop’s biggest brands.
But on India’s Got Latent, Badshah gave a much simpler answer — he named himself.
Whether it was a clarification, a different recollection or simply Badshah’s way of looking at the story today, Samay’s “I heard a different story” ensured that the internet would immediately start revisiting the past.
Then Honey Singh Walked Into the Conversation
The most entertaining twist came when Honey Singh appeared to respond indirectly.
After the clip gained attention, Honey Singh shared an edit on his Instagram Story with the words “Meri gandi aulaad.” He also commented on the same reel, writing “Meri nalayak aulaad.”
There was no lengthy explanation or serious statement. Just a few words — but enough to send fans into a frenzy.
The playful wording also added another layer to the old equation between the two rappers. Was Honey Singh joking? Was he claiming his own version of the story? Or was it simply an old-school dig between two artists with plenty of history?
From Mafia Mundeer to Separate Thrones
The backstory makes the exchange even more fascinating. Honey Singh and Badshah were once associated with Mafia Mundeer, a collective that became an important part of the early commercial rise of Indian hip-hop.
Their paths eventually separated, and both went on to establish themselves as major names in the music industry. Yet their association has continued to resurface through discussions surrounding their past, creative differences and conflicting versions of their journey.
The Name May Be Small, But the History Isn’t
What makes this episode interesting is that there was no direct confrontation. Samay asked a question. Badshah gave his answer. Samay hinted at another version. And Honey Singh responded with two sarcastic phrases.
But sometimes, that is all it takes.
Because behind the word “Badshah” lies a story that apparently has more than one narrator.
