Zahoor Mistry in Dhurandhar 2: Know the real-life character & his mysterious death — Spoiler alert

In Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge, there's a character named Zahoor Mistry who was one of the terrorists who hijacked Indian Airlines Flight IC-814 back in 1999.

Dhurandhar movie fans who have watched it especially on the first weekend after the release of the film, are connecting with the real life events and real life persons with whom the movie’s character seems to be loosely inspired.

The Dhurandhar 1st and 2nd part are in sequel, and the characters who were introduced in the first part were carried forward to the second except some like Rehman Dakait played by Akshay Khanna. As per the fans' review Rehmna Dakait’s character was highly missed in the second part.

Except for the scenes from the other movie, there has been one scene that brought up painful memories for many Indians. In Dhurandhar: The Revenge, there is a character named Zahoor Mistry, who was one of the hijackers of the Indian Airlines flight IC-814 way back in 1999. This role is played by an actor named Vivek Sinha.

What Zahoor Mistry does in the movie

Zahoor appears in flashback scenes that connect the first Dhurandhar film to this sequel. During the hijacking, he speaks harshly to the Indian intelligence chief played by R Madhavan. Later, Ranveer Singh's character Hamza finds and kills him as revenge. This closes a story that began 25 years ago when India felt humiliated after releasing terrorists to save passengers.

The real man behind the character

The movie character is based on Zahoor Ibrahim, also called Zahid Akhund, one of the five terrorists who took over Flight IC-814 on December 24, 1999. This was right before Christmas when 176 passengers were suddenly in danger.

It was Zahoor who cruelly killed passenger Rupin Katyal, a young newlywed going on his honeymoon. Rupin was stabbed 25 times and bled to death on the floor of the plane. This horrific crime during the 8-day crisis forced India to set free three dangerous terrorists, including Masood Azhar, in return for the lives of the passengers.

The hijacking case is still regarded as the most dramatic aviation crisis that India has ever witnessed. After a series of negotiations that lasted for a number of days, the Indian government was forced to free three jailed Pakistani terrorists, Masood Azhar, Omar Saeed Sheikh, and Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar, in return for the freedom of the hostages. The operation was led by the former Intelligence Bureau official Ajit Doval.

What really happened to the real Zahoor?

The hijackers simply disappeared after they were released in Kandahar. There was some news that Zahoor was shot dead in Karachi, but no one really knows for sure.

People wonder if Pakistan's intelligence protected him or if rival terrorists killed him. His fate remains a mystery even today.

Why this scene hits so hard

For anyone who remembers 1999, watching Zahoor get his cinematic punishment feels like closure. India had to swallow a bitter pill back then, releasing terrorists who later caused more attacks. Ranveer's character giving justice on screen touches a deep national wound.

Director Aditya Dhar researched old files and spoke to survivors to make the hijacking scenes feel real. Even the plane's cockpit and hijacker names match actual records. Vivek Sinha prepared by studying the real events and gave a chilling performance that stays with you.

25 years later, Dhurandhar 2 turns national pain into cinematic justice, a reminder of what India lost, and what it fights for every day.
