Amritsar flood havoc: 40 villges submerged-rescue operations initiated

Overnight operations continue as officials and Army evacuate stranded families using tractors and boats in flood-hit Amritsar villages.

Amritsar is facing a severe flood crisis after the Dhusi embankment breach on August 27 sent gushing waters into nearby residential areas. Entire villages were submerged, forcing mass evacuations.

Rescue operations began early on Wednesday morning, with Deputy Commissioner (DC) Sakshi Sahani, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Maninder Singh, and Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Rohit Gupta supervising efforts to move families from waterlogged homes to safer shelters.

By late night, officials were still on the ground, coordinating evacuations. At 4 AM on August 28, DC Sahani and ADC Rohit Gupta once again led rescue teams towards Ramdas, but rising waters blocked vehicle movement. The administration deployed tractors to advance rescue efforts.

Meanwhile, Army personnel reached the affected areas early Thursday morning, bringing in boats and trained rescue teams to ensure safe evacuation. Currently, the administration and Army are working together to shift stranded residents to relief camps, with DC Sahani personally overseeing the mission.
