Australia has officially announced new details for Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa for program year 2026–2027 and this visa is popular among young people from countries like India, China and Vietnam who want to travel, work and experience life in Australia for a limited period.
Australian Government has opened registrations for a special visa pre-application system called a “ballot” for Work and Holiday visa and this system is for people from India, China and Vietnam where instead of allowing everyone to apply directly, Australia will now first collect registrations and then randomly select applicants and only selected people will be allowed to apply for the actual visa later. This process is used because demand for this visa is much higher than the number of available seats.
Important dates and timeline
For 2026–2027 program year:
Registration opens: 4 June 2026
Registration closes: 25 June 2026
Selection period starts: 2 July 2026
Selection period ends: 30 April 2027
So applicants will only have about three weeks to register.
Who can apply for the ballot?
To register applicants must meet some basic conditions:
Be between 18 and 30 years old
Have a valid passport from India, China or Vietnam
Have a valid national identity card
Have a working email address
Create an ImmiAccount on Australian immigration website
Pay a registration fee of 25 Australian dollars (Around 1,700 Indian rupees)
This is not a direct visa application and it is only a registration for a random selection system so after registering and paying the fee:
Your name goes into a pool of applicants
Australian system randomly selects candidates
If selected you will receive an email called “Notification of Selection”
You then get 28 days to apply for the actual visa
Note: Being selected does not guarantee you will get the visa instead it only means you are allowed to apply.
The Australian Government says this ballot system is fair and transparent and it helps manage high demand and avoids a rush where too many people apply at once.
Through this method:
Selection is completely random
No preference is given based on education, job or background
Every eligible applicant has an equal chance
There are some strict conditions applicants must follow:
You can register only once during registration period
registration fee of 25 AUD will not be refunded even if you are not selected
If your details are incorrect your application may be rejected
Your passport details and national ID must match exactly
Indian applicants must have a valid PAN card
Vietnamese applicants must have a 12-digit national ID card
After you submit your form you will receive confirmation that your registration is received and your status will show as “received” in ImmiAccount following which you can edit some details if needed before selection and you will not be notified if you are not selected.
If you are selected then you will get an official email from the Australian Government and you must apply for the visa within 28 days also you must upload all required documents including your passport and national ID. But if you are not selected then you cannot apply for the visa in that program year and you will not get any refund also you will not receive any rejection email either.
This visa system gives young people from India, China and Vietnam a chance to live and work in Australia for a limited time but only through a random selection process and anyone interested should carefully prepare documents, check eligibility and register within the official dates in June 2026.
