Gunshots were heard early Friday morning outside the ancestral house of Bollywood actress Disha Patani in Bareilly's Civil Lines, Uttar Pradesh. No one was injured, but the assault has prompted increased security and a multi-team police investigation. The shooting is thought to be connected to recent comments about Hindu spiritual leaders and subsequent threats on social media.
Around 4:30 am, two unknown men on a motorbike fired several rounds, including aerial shots, outside the house of the Patani family. Disha's father, retired DSP Jagdish Singh Patani, her mother, and older sister Khushboo Patani were there; Disha was in Mumbai herself.
Police found fired cartridges and sent several special units—such as the SOG and the crime branch—to probe. There is heightened police security around the house now, with forensic and CCTV analysis in progress.
An FIR has been filed, and the authorities are searching for the culprits.
Shortly after the shooting, a threatening social media post—allegedly from Virendra Charan and Mahendra Saran (Delana), and linked to the Goldy Brar gang—claimed responsibility for the attack.
The message accused the Patani family, specifically Disha’s sister Khushboo, of “insulting” Hindu saints Premanand Maharaj and Aniruddhacharya Maharaj, and warned: “This was just a trailer. Next time, if anyone insults our religion, no one in their house will be left alive.” The threat was broadened to include other artists and members of the film industry.
The controversy surrounds a July Instagram story from Khushboo Patani, a retired Army major, who criticized Aniruddhacharya Maharaj for derogatory remarks about women in live-in relationships.
Her comments were misattributed by some to Premanand Maharaj as well, fueling online outrage. Khushboo issued clarifications, explaining that her criticism was solely directed at Aniruddhacharya, not Premanand Maharaj, and warned trollers of legal action.
No injuries were reported, but tight police security remains at the Patani residence. The case is under active investigation by crime and surveillance teams, amid ongoing concerns over celebrity safety and the impact of organized crime and hate campaigns linked to religious sentiment.
