"Rs 1500 Cr for Himachal, what about Punjab?" – PM Modi announces flood relief

PM Narendra Modi visited Himachal Pradesh today to review the destruction caused by recent cloudbursts, heavy rains and landslides

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Himachal Pradesh today to review the destruction caused by recent cloudbursts, heavy rains, and landslides across the state. The visit comes amid mounting questions over disaster preparedness and relief measures in neighbouring states like Punjab.

PM Modi began his assessment with an aerial survey of the most affected regions, witnessing the extent of damage to homes, roads, and farmland. He then held a detailed review meeting in Kangra to evaluate ongoing relief efforts and rehabilitation measures. Announcing a comprehensive support package, he sanctioned Rs 1,500 crore for Himachal Pradesh, which includes the advance release of the second instalment of SDRF funds and PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi payments.

The Prime Minister also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured in the calamity. During the visit, he met affected families, offering condolences and assuring that the Central Government would work closely with the state for rapid restoration and rebuilding.

Highlighting a multi-pronged recovery strategy, PM Modi outlined measures to rebuild homes under PM Awas Yojana, restore national highways, reconstruct schools, and provide relief under PMNRF, including mini kits for livestock. Special attention will be given to farmers lacking electricity connections. Schools will report and geotag damages under Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan to facilitate timely assistance.

The PM also emphasized water management initiatives, including the construction of rainwater harvesting and recharge structures to improve groundwater levels and prevent future crises.

Meeting personnel from NDRF, SDRF and Aapda Mitra volunteers, PM Modi appreciated their prompt response and tireless efforts. Inter-ministerial central teams have been dispatched to further assess damages, and additional support will follow based on their reports.

Acknowledging the scale of the disaster, PM Modi assured that the Central Government will extend all possible help to restore normalcy in Himachal Pradesh. The announcement also raises questions about relief measures in Punjab, where recent floods have caused widespread damage, prompting citizens and experts to ask: will similar support be extended there?
