The Aam Aadmi Party has made a significant organisational change in the politically important Jalandhar North Assembly constituency by appointing Jalandhar Mayor Vaneet Dhir as the new Halka In-charge, replacing Dinesh Dhall and the decision is being seen as an attempt to strengthen the party's urban base ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Notably, Dhir's own ward — Ward 62 — falls in the Jalandhar West segment, not Jalandhar North. His deployment to lead the party's charge in Jalandhar North is therefore a deliberate cross-constituency move, leaning on his citywide profile as Mayor rather than a home-turf advantage.
The move comes at a time when the electoral history of Jalandhar North shows that the constituency has largely alternated between the Congress and the BJP, while AAP is still trying to establish itself as a winning force.
Jalandhar North's assembly history since 1997 shows a clear back-and-forth between two parties. Avtar Henry of the Congress held the seat through both the 1997 and 2002 elections. The BJP then broke through in 2007, with K.D. Bhandari winning that year and again in 2012, giving the party two consecutive terms. Congress regained the seat in 2017 through Avtar Singh Junior, who went on to retain it in 2022 as well.
Taken together, the trend shows Congress winning four of the last six Assembly elections, while the BJP's strength has been concentrated in the 2007–2012 period under K.D. Bhandari. Since 2017, Congress has held firm control through Avtar Singh Junior, and notably, no third party has managed to win the constituency at any point since 1997.
The 2022 Assembly election saw Congress retain Jalandhar North despite AAP's statewide landslide. Congress' Avtar Singh Junior defeated BJP's K.D. Bhandari, while AAP finished third in the constituency. The 2022 vote-share pattern stood at approximately:

Mayor Vaneet Dhir is now one of AAP's most visible urban faces in Jalandhar. By assigning him responsibility for Jalandhar North, the party is signalling that it intends to strengthen booth-level organisation and improve its performance in an Assembly constituency where it has so far remained behind both Congress and BJP.
Political observers believe the decision also reflects AAP's intent to leverage the Mayor's visibility and municipal governance experience to build a stronger connect with urban voters — even though his elected base lies in the neighbouring Jalandhar West segment.
Taken together, Jalandhar North's electoral history breaks into three clear phases. The first, from 1997 to 2002, was defined by Congress dominance under Avtar Henry. The second, from 2007 to 2012, saw the BJP break through and consolidate its hold on the seat under K.D. Bhandari — notably, this remains the only stretch in the seat's history that BJP has won at all. The third phase, from 2017 to 2022, marked a Congress revival under Avtar Singh Junior, who has held the seat ever since.
Against this backdrop, AAP has yet to convert its state-level popularity into an actual victory in Jalandhar North, finishing third in both 2017 and 2022 despite sweeping to power across Punjab in the latter year. The appointment of Vaneet Dhir as halqa in-charge, however, suggests the party is beginning its campaign for the seat well in advance of the 2027 election, rather than waiting until closer to the polls as it has in the past.
Based on the 2022 Assembly result, Congress retains the advantage of a sitting MLA and an established local network. However, the 2024 Lok Sabha Assembly-segment lead for BJP demonstrates that the party remains highly competitive in urban Jalandhar.
AAP's organisational reshuffle suggests the party is trying to bridge the gap before candidate selection begins. If it succeeds in improving its urban outreach, Jalandhar North could witness a genuine three-cornered contest in 2027. If not, the seat is likely to remain a direct battle between Congress and BJP, as it has been for most of the past three decades.
