Punjab civic body election results across 104 local bodies including 8 municipal corporations have sent a strong political message ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls and the results which are being seen as a “semi-final” before the big battle show the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) maintaining a clear lead while Congress shows limited recovery and Shiromani Akali Dal struggles for relevance while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the other hand remains far behind in the race.
According to the latest counting trends AAP has won around 881 wards across Punjab’s municipal corporations, councils and nagar panchayats while Congress stands at 355 wards, BJP at 153, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) at 178 and others and independents have secured 251 seats and voting for these elections took place on May 26 while the counting began at 8 AM on May 29 under tight security.
Across 1,977 total wards AAP’s lead is being seen as a clear consolidation of its grassroots presence especially in urban and semi-urban regions and the results also show strong local signals in key political battlegrounds as in Dhuri Municipal Council which is Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s constituency AAP delivered a near-clean sweep by winning 20 out of 21 wards and this performance is being viewed as a major morale boost for Bhagwant Mann and it will hwlp him in strengthening his political base in his home area.
In Gidderbaha a traditional stronghold of Congress leader and Punjab state president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, AAP also made deep inroads by winning around 12 out of 19 wards marking a clear setback for Congress in a prestige battle and experts say these results show AAP is expanding beyond its earlier strong zones into opposition strongholds.
In Kapurthala Municipal Corporation Congress managed to hold its ground strongly and out of 50 wards Congress won 31 seats securing control of the corporation house under leadership of MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh and AAP managed 11 seats while BJP and SAD won 3 seats each and 2 went to independents while on the other hand in Sultanpur Lodhi Municipal Council independent MLA Rana Inder Pratap supported candidates dominated with 7 wins out of 13 wards while AAP secured 5 and SAD only 1 seat and these mixed results show that while AAP leads overall local factors and candidate strength still matter in several areas.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said opposition parties who once claimed victory in other states have “finished at the bottom” in Punjab civic polls referring to BJP’s weak performance and placing it even below expectations. BJP which had earlier spoken about expanding its base in Punjab after Bengal-style gains has ended up at bottom tier in several urban contests while SAD which promised a comeback also remains in fourth position overall.
Political observers say these results show a mixed but clear picture and AAP’s performance is being seen as a strong “booster dose” for its cadre and the strong civic performance now is expected to rebuild confidence within the party at ground level but challenges still exist before 2027.
For Congress the results are a small sign of revival in pockets like Kapurthala but not enough to challenge AAP statewide and the party is now trying to position itself as main opposition ahead of 2027 and at the SAD continues to struggle with organizational recovery while BJP’s performance remains weak despite recent restructuring moves including the appointment of former Barnala MLA Kewal Singh Dhillon as state president as a part of its 2027 preparation strategy.
Several factors explain AAP’s strong performance: welfare schemes at the local level, organizational presence in smaller towns, voter satisfaction with urban services and strong appeal of state government’s leadership under Mann however political experts also caution that civic polls are different from Assembly elections and voter mood can shift quickly.
Historically Congress had won with a big mandate in 2021 municipal elections but just a year later in 2022 it suffered a major collapse in Assembly polls winning only 18 seats while AAP rose to power with 92 seats and this contrast is now being used as a reminder that civic results may show trends but they do not always decide final outcomes and as Punjab moves closer to 2027 these results are being read as an early signal but not a final verdict.
