Who will contest the Jalandhar North Assembly seat in the 2027 Punjab elections? With the next electoral battle approaching, four prominent names are drawing attention: sitting Congress MLA Avtar Singh Junior, former BJP MLA K.D. Bhandari, former AAP candidate Dinesh Dhall, who joined the BJP in September 2026, and Jalandhar Mayor Vaneet Dhir, who has been given responsibility for AAP’s constituency organisation.
The political picture has changed considerably since the 2022 Assembly elections. Congress retained the seat, the BJP finished second and AAP secured more than 32,000 votes. Dhall’s move from AAP to BJP and Vaneet Dhir’s appointment as AAP constituency in-charge have added fresh questions about candidate selection.
While these four leaders are central to the current political discussion, none should be described as an officially declared 2027 candidate until the respective party announces its ticket.
Jalandhar North’s electoral history shows that the contest has changed significantly over the past three Assembly elections.
In 2012, BJP’s K.D. Bhandari defeated Congress candidate Avtar Henry by 1,703 votes. In 2017, Congress’s Avtar Singh Junior won by 32,291 votes. Congress retained the seat in 2022, but the winning margin fell to 9,486 votes.
The difference between Congress’s winning margins in 2017 and 2022 was 22,805 votes. This reflects a substantial change in the election results, although the figures alone cannot establish why voters changed their preferences.
Avtar Singh Junior won Jalandhar North in both 2017 and 2022. His father, Avtar Henry, also represented the constituency in earlier elections, giving the family a long-standing political presence in the area.
In 2017, Junior received 69,715 votes, compared with 37,424 for Bhandari. In 2022, Junior’s tally declined to 47,338, while Bhandari received 37,852.
The Congress candidate’s vote tally declined by 22,377 between the two elections.
The main question for 2027 is whether Congress will renominate its sitting MLA or consider another face. His incumbency and previous victories make him a significant name in the discussion, but the party’s final decision remains unconfirmed.
The BJP’s possible candidate selection is another major question in Jalandhar North.
K.D. Bhandari: An established electoral contender
Bhandari won the constituency in 2012 with 52,198 votes. He subsequently contested against Avtar Singh Junior in 2017 and 2022, receiving 37,424 and 37,852 votes respectively.
His vote tally increased by 428 between the last two Assembly elections. His previous victories and subsequent contests make him an established BJP figure in Jalandhar North.
Whether the party selects him for 2027 remains to be announced.
Dinesh Dhall: A former AAP candidate who joined BJP
Dinesh Dhall contested the 2022 Assembly election on an AAP ticket, securing 32,685 votes. He had served as AAP’s Jalandhar North constituency in-charge before being removed from the position in July 2026.
On September 2, 2026, Dhall joined the BJP in the presence of Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon and other party leaders. More than a dozen supporters also joined the party, including municipal councillor Amit Dhall, according to contemporary reporting.
His political switch is significant because he has previously contested the same constituency and held an organisational role there. It also places him in the same party as Bhandari, creating a question about the BJP’s eventual candidate choice.
The party could consider Bhandari, Dhall or another contender. Any suggestion that one of them has already secured the ticket requires official confirmation.
AAP appointed Jalandhar Mayor Vaneet Dhir as its Jalandhar North constituency in-charge in July 2026, replacing Dhall. His organisational role has brought him into the discussion surrounding the next Assembly election.
The next question is whether AAP will nominate Vaneet Dhir, select another candidate or take a different approach. Being constituency in-charge does not automatically mean that Dhir will receive the Assembly ticket.
Alongside candidate selection, the condition of roads, sewerage and drainage, waterlogging, traffic congestion, railway crossings, sanitation and public services deserves attention in the run-up to the election.
Youth employment, education, healthcare and the implementation of government schemes may also feature in the political debate. These issues require on-ground reporting rather than assumptions about how residents will vote.
The four names currently in focus reflect different political positions: Avtar Singh Junior is the sitting Congress MLA; K.D. Bhandari is a former BJP MLA; Dinesh Dhall is a former AAP candidate who has joined the BJP; and Vaneet Dhir is Jalandhar Mayor and AAP’s constituency in-charge.
The next stage will depend on official candidate announcements, party organisation and local campaign developments. Congress must decide whether to retain its incumbent, BJP must determine how it approaches the Bhandari–Dhall question, and AAP must decide whether its organisational changes translate into a new Assembly candidate.
For now, the race for the Jalandhar North ticket remains open. The previous election data provides the background, while the four leaders’ political roles make them prominent names to watch. The final contest will only be established when the parties announce their nominees.
