Political circles in Jalandhar could witness fresh activity following Pargat Singh’s appointment as Punjab Congress president. Speculation is emerging around a prominent BJP leader who could potentially switch sides and join the Congress ahead of the next Punjab Assembly elections. However, the possibility of this move has not been independently confirmed, and no official announcement has been made by the leader concerned.
Jalandhar West is emerging as a possible centre of these political discussions. According to the speculation, the leader previously held a prominent position in another political party before joining the BJP a few years ago.
The discussion centres on whether dissatisfaction over the possibility of not receiving a preferred Assembly ticket could influence the leader’s future political decision. If the leader eventually joins the Congress and seeks a ticket from Jalandhar West, the development could add a new dimension to the constituency’s electoral contest.
Jalandhar West has witnessed significant shifts in political fortunes over successive Punjab Assembly elections. In 2002, Congress candidate Mohinder Singh Kaypee won the seat with 34,869 votes, defeating BJP candidate Chunni Lal Bhagat, who secured 24,046 votes. In 2007, Bhagat turned the tables, winning with 56,775 votes against Kaypee’s 44,860. The BJP retained the constituency in 2012, when Bhagat secured 48,207 votes, defeating Congress candidate Suman Kaypee, who received 36,864 votes. In 2017, Congress candidate Sushil Kumar Rinku won with 53,983 votes, defeating BJP’s Mahinder Pal Bhagat, who polled 36,649 votes. The political landscape shifted again in 2022, when AAP candidate Sheetal Angural won with 39,213 votes, defeating Rinku, who received 34,960 votes.
The July 2024 by-election further demonstrated the constituency’s changing political dynamics. AAP candidate Mohinder Bhagat won with 55,246 votes, defeating BJP candidate Sheetal Angural, who received 17,921 votes. Congress candidate Surinder Kaur finished third with 16,757 votes.
The result highlighted AAP’s strong position in the constituency at that time. Any potential change in candidate line-ups or party affiliations could therefore become a significant factor in the next electoral contest.
If a prominent BJP leader joins the Congress and contests from Jalandhar West, the move could influence the constituency’s political calculations. It could provide Congress with another potential candidate while raising questions about BJP’s local leadership and candidate-selection strategy.
However, a political switch alone would not guarantee electoral success. The leader’s local support base, public image, organisational network and acceptance among voters would all play a role.
The key questions remain whether the leader is genuinely considering joining Congress, whether Jalandhar West is the preferred constituency, and whether the Congress leadership would consider offering a ticket.
For now, the development is just a political speculation rather than a confirmed defection.
