Affidavits show wide education gap among Punjab MLAs, with just two holding PhDs

According to affidavits submitted to Election Commission for 2022 Punjab Assembly elections two MLAs were the most educated among the list of legislators in state and data compiled by "MyNetaJi” shows that Mohammad Jamil Ur Rehman, MLA from Malerkotla, and Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, MLA from Amritsar North, has declared Doctorate degrees which were highest educational qualification among Punjab's 117 MLAs elected in 2022.

Mohammad Jamil Ur Rehman of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won from Malerkotla while Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh of AAP won from Amritsar North however it is noteworthy that while Mohammad Jamil Ur Rehman is still serving AAP MLA for Malerkotla but Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh now serves independently after being suspended by party.

The data also shows that 68 of Punjab's 117 MLAs are graduates or above accounting for about 58% of Assembly and among them are graduates, graduate professionals, postgraduates and doctorate degree holders and at the other end of the list some MLAs have declared educational qualifications below matriculation. The educational details are based on self-declared affidavits filed by candidates during the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.

A diverse mix of candidates

2022 Punjab Assembly election witnessed a diverse mix of candidates and winners in terms of education, wealth and background and according to data analysed by “My Neta Ji” a total of 1,287 candidates contested across Punjab’s 117 constituencies. Out of these candidates 490, or 38% declared themselves as graduates or above while at the same time 321 candidates or 25% declared criminal cases against themselves while 221 candidates or 17% reported serious criminal cases. The analysis also found that 527 candidates or 41% were crorepatis. Women accounted for 91 candidates representing 7% of total contestants.

Among the 117 winning candidates educational qualifications were generally higher and data shows that 68 winners or 58% were graduates or above and a total of 87 winners or 74% were crorepatis.

The analysis further showed that 58 winning candidates or 50% had declared criminal cases, while 27 winners or 23% had declared serious criminal cases. Women won 13 seats, accounting for 11% of total winners.

The data further shows that 74% of the winning candidates in 2022 Assembly election were crorepatis and out of 117 winners 87 declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore however the list of Punjab’s richest MLAs changed after subsequent by elections.
