50 rooftop water harvesting systems to be installed over government buildings: DC Jalandhar Ghanshyam Thori

New Year Bonanza for city as government approves rain water harvesting project worth Rs.1.74 Crore under smart city; Project aims at saving 10 Crore liters of water annually

O/o District Public Relations Officer, Jalandhar, December31 - In a New Year bonanza for the city residents, the state government hasapproved rain water harvesting (RHS) project worth Rs. 1.74 crore under smartcity scheme.

Divulging the details, Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thorisaid that as many as 50 rooftop rainwater harvesting systems would be installedover the government building under this project.

He added that the work as the state government hassanctioned the project, the tendering procedure would be initiated within a fewdays. He said that Soil and Water Conservation Department being the executingagency was asked to begin with the project. 

The Deputy Commissioner said the groundwater table had beendepleting constantly in the district and all 10 blocks of Jalandhar districthad been declared overexploited. He said the rainwater harvesting systems wouldnot only recharge the water but would also help to check the depleting watertable. 

The deputy commissioner mentioned that 50 governmentbuildings selected for the project include ITI women Lajpat Nagar, DPRO office,GPS New Santokhpura, GPS Kishanpura, GHS Kishanpura, GPS Santokhpura (old),GSSS Model Town, GPS Lambapind, GHS Kot Ramdas, GPS Kot Ramdas, Commissioner ofPolice Jalandhar, Chief Agriculture Officer, Jalandhar, SSP Rural, DEO(Elementry), Jalandhar, GHS (Girls) Gandhi Nagar, GSSS (Girls) Nehru Gardan,District Social Justice and Empowerment Officer, GPS (Boys) Garha, GMS Garha,Doordarshan Kendra, All India Radio, Lions Club, GPS Kirti Nagar, Bist DoabKapurthala Road, GPS Suchi Pind, GPS Ram Nagar, GPS Dhilwan, GM Co-EducationLadowali Road, GSSS Dakoha, GPS Basti Mithu, GPS Chohak Kalan, GHS NangalShama, GSSS Ladhewali, GPS Ladhewali, GPS Adarsh Nagar, GPS Reru, GPSSansarpur, GPS Godiapur, GHS Sansarpur, GPS Bidhipur, GPS Maqsoodan, GPS Nagra,GMS Basti Seikh, GSSS Model House, GSSS Basti Sheikh, and the building ofhorticulture office, Jalandhar Cantt. 

He said the state government, led by Chief Minister CaptAmarinder Singh, was making concerted efforts to save the depletion ofgroundwater further either by plantation of saplings, increasing green cover,promoting maize and other crops which use less water, drip irrigation orinstalling rainwater harvesting systems in the state. 

The DC exhorted youths to become ambassadors of waterconservation in their localities where they live. He said it was a collectiveduty for all of us to save this precious asset otherwise people would facedangerous consequences. 

He said the wastage of water must be stopped at any cost andrequested farmers and the public to conserve water for their futuregenerations. 

Pointing out further, Sub Divisional Soil ConservationOfficer Lupinder Kumar said that the rooftop rainwater harvesting project wouldcover a total area of 43155 Sq. meter with saving of about 10 crore litres ofwater annually. He mentioned that such mega water saving would help levellingup the depleting ground water table in the district. He further added that theproject itself was self-sustainable for a longer period and requires leastmaintenance.
