Aadhaar-linked e-voting system to be introduced in India by 2024 general elections

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said that the Election Commission of India is working with IIT Madras on blockchain technology for remote voting.

TheChief Election Commissioner of India Sunil Arora on Friday at Hyderabad saidthat aadhaar-linked e-voting could be part of the changes that ElectionCommission of India is aiming to implement in the next general elections in2024.

Hesaid that Election Commission of India is working closely with IIT Madras onblockchain technology for remote voting.

SunilArora made this big announcement while he was speaking to the IPS Trainees at theSardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad on Friday. Hesaid that introduction of e-voting will change the India’s traditional votingsystem.

Hefurther said with the implementation of e-voting in India, the voters would beable to cast their votes from any part of the country, no matter where they areregistered to vote or even if they are in abroad.

Asper information, the model of e-voting would be presented by IIT Madras beforethe Commission by next month i.e April and if the ECI gives nod to the model, aprototype could be made ready by the end of 2021. Besides, if the project isgiven a green signal by the ECI, changes in the election law would be requiredand for that they would be approaching the Law Ministry.

CECfurther informed that in the first phase the proposal would enable voting atdesignated centres in different cities, however in the second phase of theproject, if approved, it could be used to enable overseas electors to casttheir votes, he said.

SunilArora said that Election commission is working on linking Aadhaar card with voterID as part of electoral reforms. He said the two-way electronic voting systemwould only be possible only when the linking is complete.

Hefurther talking about the ‘one nation-one election’ said that it is onlypossible if basic laws are amended. He also said that to make this ‘onenation-one election’ dream come true, political consensus must be sought forsimultaneous polls at national and state levels.
