Arrested on his way to Hathras, Malayalam journalist Kappan awaits release

Accused as an extremist and charged under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), Kappan has been imprisoned for allegedly trying to incite trouble.

Siddique Kappan, aged 41, a Malayalam journalist wasarrested in October 5, 2020 because he was going to Uttar Pradesh to report onthe rape of a Dalit girl. Kappan is lodged in a Mathura jail for the past threemonths.

His wife said he was falsely charged. She is going tostage a sit-in protest in Thiruvanthapuram on the same lines that she stagedlast week.

Accused as an extremist and charged under UnlawfulActivities Prevention Act (UAPA), Kappan has been imprisoned for allegedlytrying to incite trouble.

About 20 people, including his wife, Raihanath; familyand friends staged a protest on Tuesday.

Kappan with other three people were accused as being themembers of Muslim Right wing outfit, Popular Front of India.

In a report published in The Telegraph, Kappan's wifesaid, "I’m a housewife who has been forced to hit the streets to seekjustice for my husband, who has been wrongly accused of links with the PFI. Nowit’s up to me and my family to ensure he gets justice."

According to his wife, Raihanath, Kppan has a bedriddenmother who is 90 years old. His wife seeks permission to have a video call withKappan.

The matter had came in the Kerala Assembly where theopposition leaders wanted the government to intervene. Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Ministerof Kerala cited limitations on the part of the government in the court cases.
