DC Jalandhar asks Red Cross Society to set up book bank within its premises

Move aimed at ensuring access to quality education for poorest of poor students.

In a big reprieve to the needy students, the DeputyCommissioner Jalandhar Mr. Ghanshyam Thori today asked the District Red CrossSociety to open a book bank for overcoming all hurdles in the way of theireducation.

Chairing a meeting of the annual general meeting of theRed Cross Society here at the District Administrative Complex here today, theDeputy Commissioner said that the book bank would provide access to thestudents without adequate funds to purchase them. He said that people should beencouraged to donate books in the book bank for helping the poor and needystudents. He said that these books would be provided free of cost the needystudents.

Acceding to the demand of the shopkeepers of the RedCross Market to waive off their rent due to lockdown/ curfew, the DeputyCommissioner said that it was necessary as the business of these shopkeepershad suffered due to Covid 19. It was also decided to waive off one month’s rentin case any shopkeeper submits 11 months of rent in advance.

Recalling the stellar role of society during Covidcrisis, the Deputy Commissioner said that the society had organized 84 blooddonation camps during the period and collected 1573 units of blood. He saidthat during the peak covid period 23,745 masks, 10500 soap, 9500 sanitisers,1230 gloves, 36,500 packets of cooked food, 50,575 packets of dry ration, 6180bottles of juice along with free immunity booster medicine to 2800 familieswere provided free of cost.

Lauding the role of Jatinder Soni, a social worker, thedeputy commissioner said that his selfless services to the people isencouraging others to follow his footsteps. Jatinder Soni, who is attached withthe Red cross society said that  he hasdonated blood for as many as 137 times and besides organizing blood donationcamps during the pandemic. He further added that he has adopted a total of 23thalassemia affected children and his society was taking care of theirtreatment for the last five years. Notably, Jatinder Soni is a official atdistrict courts and spent his entire salary on social cause.

On the occasion, Additional Deputy Commissioner JasbirSingh, Sub Divisional Magistrates Mr. Rahul Sindhu, Dr. Sanjiv Sharma and Dr.Jai Inder Singh were also present.
