DC reviews Jal Jeevan Mission, directs officials to ensure tap water connections to 45274 rural households by June 2021

Jalandhar provides functional tap water connections to 1.82 lakh households

DeputyCommissioner Ghanshyam Thori on Wednesday directed the officials of water supplyand sanitation to ensure tap water connections to 45274 households in Jalandharby the end of June 2021 under Jal Jeevan Mission.

Presidingover a meeting held under Jal Jeevan Mission with the officials, DeputyCommissioner informed the district administration that it had a target ofcovering 2,32,122 households with functional tap water connections under JalJeevan Mission.

He said that 1, 31,802 households were givenfunctional tap water connections in April 2020, and during the last eightmonths, it provided the functional tap water connections to 51160 householdstaking the coverage tally to 1, 82,962 households.

Hefurther told out of the remaining 49160 households, some villages have now comeunder the city’s jurisdiction due to which the target has been reduced to 45274households which would be water tap connections in the next five months.

DeputyCommissioner said that work is already on 16037 households and others are inthe tendering stage.

Hesaid that the Punjab Government led by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, iscommitted to achieving universal coverage of 100% rural households withFunctional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) at an accelerated pace by March2022 but district administration is aiming to cover the target by June 2021.

GhanshyamThori asked the executive engineers and Junior Engineers and others of theWater Supply and Sanitation Department to leave no stone unturned to cover allremaining rural households by June 2021 so that district administration canensure the potable water service delivery in adequate quantity to allhouseholds.

Hefurther told them to hold meetings with the remaining panchayats’ heads andexpedite the ongoing works to benefit the rural population mostly from the poorsection of the society.

Hesaid that under Jal Jeevan Mission, the local panchayat is being involved inthe planning, implementation, management, operation, and maintenance of watersupply systems in villages for achieving drinking water to all households inthe rural areas.

DeputyCommissioner further said the focus is also being laid on rainwater harvesting,groundwater recharge, and management of household wastewater for reuse inagriculture.
