In a strategic move to alleviate traffic challenges at the Dhakoli railway crossing, Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain has directed the Municipal Council (MC) of Zirakpur to punctually submit A proposal to the railway authorities for constructing a Railway Over Bridge (ROB) instead of the previously approved Railway Under Pass (RUB).
During a joint meeting held at the District Administrative Complex in SAS Nagar, which included officials from MC Zirakpur, railway representatives, and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Derabassi Amit Gupta, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized the potential long-term issues associated with the RUB. Concerns were raised regarding the approved underpass’s clear height of 3.35 meters, which is notably lower than the Baltana intersection point of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). This limited height could prevent The passage of larger vehicles leads to traffic congestion.
Moreover, the meeting highlighted the risk of waterlogging within the underpass, a problem that could be exacerbated during the monsoon season, further disrupting traffic flow. The road from the Dhakoli railway crossing diverges into two routes: one leading to the National Highway and the other to Derabassi.
Given these considerations, the consensus among MC and railway officials, along with SDM Derabassi Amit Gupta, was to replace the RUB with a ROB. It was resolved that a revised proposal would be submitted to the railway authorities, accompanied by a request to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed overbridge.
Deputy Commissioner Jain underlined the importance of long-term urban planning for Zirakpur, especially in light of rapid urbanization. She stated, “Addressing the current and future traffic demands is crucial. The construction of an overbridge at the Dhakoli railway crossing is a proactive step towards ensuring smooth traffic flow and accommodating the city’s growth.”
The initial plan for an underbridge was sanctioned by the Northern Railway in July 2024, with an estimated budget of Rs 11.70 crore, to be shared equally between the Railways and the Punjab Government. The Zirakpur Municipal Council had already deposited its 50% share of Rs 5.85 crore. However, technical assessments revealed that the underbridge’s limited height could restrict the movement of taller vehicles, prompting the reconsideration of the project in favour of an overbridge.
Residents of the area have long faced inconveniences due to prolonged waits and traffic jams at the level crossing. The construction of an overbridge is expected to provide significant relief, ensuring a smoother commute for the thousands who traverse this route daily.
The District Administration, in collaboration with the State Government, remains committed to resolving this critical bottleneck in the Zirakpur area.
