Former Councillor Sukhmeet Deputy shot dead in broad daylight in Jalandhar

The incident took place when the deceased was crossing Gopal Nagar area this afternoon.

Formercouncillor Sukhmeet Singh alias Sukhmeet Deputy who was recently released fromjail on parole in an infamous Mikki Kidnapping and Ransom case was shot dead inbroad daylight by some unknown assailants at Gazi Gulla area here today.  

Theincident took place when the deceased was crossing Gopal Nagar area near Gazi Gulla thisafternoon. As per reports, nearly a dozen bullets were fired into his body. Theeyewitnesses told the police that around four men carrying fire weapons, whoarrived in an I10 car, fired bullets on Sukhmeet who was on his motorcycle.

Theincident has raised questions on the law and order situation in the city asSukhmeet was shot dead during weekend lockdown today when police have beendeployed across the city. 

Apartfrom being a councillor, the deceased had also served as former rural congresspresident. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital nearby where doctorsdeclared him brought dead.

Hisname had earlier been in headlines after he was arrested for kidnapping Mikki Nanda, sonof film distributor and coloniser Subhash Nanda. He had then demanded Rs 1 crore asransom amount. As per the sources the cops recovered eight bullet shells fromthe spot and are checking CCTV footage to trace the accused.

DeputyCommissioner of Police Gurmeet Singh said that the police have beeninvestigating the matter. He said the manner in which the incident took placeit seems like the deceased had a personal enmity with someone. “We have procuredCCTV footage and different police teams have been deployed to nab the accused”,he added.
