"Hold remaining phases of election in one go": Mamata Banerjee to EC

Notably, earlier in the day, the EC has already cleared the air on wrapping the elections in a day in West Bengal where polling in four phases has already taken place.

Amid the sudden spike in the cases of Covid-19 in the nation, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday has asked the Election Commission of India to hold the remaining four phases of election in one go to shield the lives of people from contagious disease.

TMC leader took her micro-blogging site to ask EC to club the four phases of elections amid the increasing infection cases in the state.

"Amid an ongoing pandemic, we firmly opposed @ECISVEEP's decision to conduct WB polls in 8 phases. Now, in view of the huge surge in #COVID19 cases, I urge the ECI to consider holding the remaining phases in ONE go. This will protect the people from further exposure to #COVID19," CM Banerjee tweet read.

"No such plan of clubbing phases," a spokesperson of the Commission said.

Presently, West Bengal is the only state where elections are still underway while Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Pudducherry are awaiting the results.

Several TMC leaders have also denounced the EC for not protecting the lives of the people and conducting the elections in an unfair means to favor the national ruling party.
