India on early Tuesday morning was jolted by yet another train accident after 18 coaches of Mumbai-Howrah Mail were derailed near Chakradharpur in Jharkhand. Mumbai-Howrah Mail accident reportedly took place at 3:45 am near Badabamboo, between Rajkharswan West Outer and Barabamboo in the Chakradharpur division of the South Eastern Railway. In the accident, two people have been confirmed dead and at least 20 have been injured.
Initial investigation into the cause of the Mumbai-Howrah Mail derailment suggests that the accident happened when a goods train traveling in the opposite direction derailed and collided with the passenger train passing from the other side. As of now, rescue operations are still underway. The injured passengers received initial medical treatment in Badabamboo before being transferred to Chakradharpur for further care.
Notably, multiple aftermath videos of the Mumbai-Howrah Mail accident have gone viral on social media. Many people can be seen filming the rescue operation. Reacting to this, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee wrote on her X handle, "Another disastrous rail accident! Howrah- Mumbai mail derails in Chakradharpur division in Jharkhand today early morning, multiple deaths and huge number of injuries are the tragic consequences. I seriously ask: is this governance? This series of nightmares almost every week, this unending procession of deaths and injuries on railway tracks: for how long shall we tolerate this? Will there be no end to the callousness of Government of India?! My heart goes out to the bereaved families, condolences to the next of kin."
