Kamala Harris officially resigned from Senate on January19 ahead of his inauguration as the 49th Vice President of the United States ofAmerica.
Harris will preside over the upper house of the chamberafter assuming the charge as the Vice President. In an Op-Ed written in the SanFrancisco Chronicle on January 18, she indicated after becoming the Vice President,it will be in her capacity to be the president of the Senate.
Harris wrote, "As I resign from the Senate, I ampreparing to take an oath that would have me preside over it."
Harris will have the power of a tie-breaking vote whenboth Republican and Democratic parties will hold 50 seats in the chamber.
It will be historic for America as Harris will be thefirst woman Vice President and first woman of color, Indian American andAfrican America to assume the office.
Harris will be taking oath of office on Regina Shelton'sBible. Shelton's Bible has been an integral part of Harris' every big moment ofher political career. When she took the oath of office to become the AttorneyGeneral of California and when she swore to defend the constitution of Americaas a Senator from California, she took oath on Regina Shelton's Bible.
In an article written in Bustle, Kamala Harris in 2019 wrote,"I carry Mrs Shelton with me always." It will be one of the two Biblethat will feature at Harris' coronation.
Another Bible belongs to Justice Thurgood Marshall wasCivil Rights icon and Supreme Court justice to value his role in Harris' choiceof Howard University for graduation.
Harris began referring to Shelton as her 'Second mother.'Shelton used to own three houses in a single block in Oakland where she rannursery in one of the houses. After Harris' mother separated from her husband,she moved into an apartment above the nursery.
Harris will be sworn in by the Supreme Court Justice SoniaSotomayor. She is also the first woman to administer the oath to Harris.
