The so called 'love jihad' laws brought by Uttar Pradeshand Uttarakhand governments were challenged in the apex court. The SupremeCourt permits the petitioner to club Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradeshgovernments as parties in the case. The case challenges the validity ofcontentious love jihad laws.
An NGO can now make Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradeshas parties in the case where the state laws seek to check religious conversionon the pretext of marriage for interfaith couples and more prominently known as'love jihad'.
Supreme Court of India bench, headed by Chief Justice ofIndia, SA Bobde also allowed Jamiat-Ulema-E-Hind to intervene and become partyin the petition. It becomes party on the grounds that large number of Muslimsare being harassed due to these laws.
Jamiat-Ulema-E-Hind is a body of Islamic scholars. Itwill implead now as a respondent in the petitions challenging the laws made byUP, Uttarakhand and other states.
At a time when the court was considering two PublicInterest Litigation's (PIL) challengingthe 'love jihad' laws, the CJI agreed to allow hearging the application forimpleadment, as per LiveLaw.
