Man on focus: Radhakishan Damani becomes the sixth richest person in the country

D-Mart jumps to sixth position in business journey of 18 years, beats many including Maruti

Radhakishan Damani has become the most talked about facetoday. Radhakishan Damani was trolled a lot on different social media platformson Wednesday.

Damani, 67, runs the chain of D-Mart. On Wednesday, themarket cap of Radhakishan Damani's company Avenue Supermarts has reached Rs2.17 lakh crore.

Born on 1 January 1957 in Bikaner, Rajasthan, RadhakishanDamani had reached Mumbai with his father while studying. While studyingcommerce from Mumbai University, his father died and he entered the world ofbusiness. Damani first extended his hand in the manufacture of ball bearings.But after some time he left the manufacturing work and started marketing.

Since then this cycle continues till date. In 2002,D-Mart opened its first store. Today D-Mart has 217 stores in the country. Inthe 18-year journey of D-Mart's business, Radhakishan Damani has givencompetition to Mukesh Ambani throughout the year. Damani, the father of 3daughters, is today the sixth richest person in the country.

Damani's company, which operates retail chain DMart, hasovertaken companies such as Maruti Suzuki, Larsen & Toubro, UltraTechCement and ONGC. Avenue Supermarts is now the 17th most valuable company in thecountry.

The company was listed in March 2017 and has givenreturns of more than 1000 per cent over its issue price in the last 4 years.The shares of DMart were issued in the price band of Rs 295-299. The company'smarket cap at the time of listing was less than Rs 40,000 crore. The stock waslisted at Rs 604 and investors' money had doubled in a single day. The stockhas gained 21 per cent so far this year.
