The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today arrested Punjab's former MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira in connection with a money-laundering case linked tonarcotics trafficking and the creation of an alleged fake passport.
A few months ago, ED had also carried out raids atSukhpal’s residence in Chandigarh, five other locations in Haryana and Punjaband two places in Delhi.
Khaira is a legislator of the Punjab Ekta Party, which hefounded in 2019. He was an MLA from Bholath in Kapurthala district. He waselected to the state Assembly in 2017 on an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket, buthe later quit the party and joined Congress.
As per information, the case pertains to the probe in the2015 Fazilka (Punjab) drugs-smuggling case, in which 1,800 grams of heroin, 24gold biscuits, two weapons, 26 live cartridges and two Pakistani SIM cards wereseized from a gang of international drug smugglers by security agencies.
