Science City organizes Webinar to celebrate ‘World Earth Day’

Around 175 students from all over Punjab participated in the program through virtual mode. The theme for World Earth Day 2021 was "Restore Our Earth".

Pushpa Gujral Science City celebrated WorldEarth Day by organizing a webinar. Around 175 students from all over Punjabparticipated in the program through virtual mode. The theme for World Earth Day2021 was "Restore Our Earth".

Dr. Neelima Jerath, Director General, ScienceCity giving introductory remarks at the occasion said that focus of this yeartheme is on natural processes, emerging green technologies and innovativethinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems. The pandemic that nearlyevery country is still dealing with is a harrowing reminder of how badlyworld’s ecosystems are damaged.

The pandemic has reminded us of the fragility ofthe world, our societies and economies, as well as, the need to protectourselves from disasters including climate change and ecosystem destruction.She asserted that if we all put our best foot forward and take concerted actionto find better solutions to restore our planet then we can expect certainrewards in the future, she added.

Dr. Vinayak Sinha, Associate Prof., Departmentof Earth and Environment Sciences, IISER, Mohali was the key speaker at thisoccasion. Delivering a talk at the occasion, he demonstrated the basic conceptsof atmospheric chemistry and air quality. He informed that combination ofemission sources, atmospheric chemistry and meteorological conditions cancollectively drive adverse air quality. Further, research conducted by theatmospheric observatory setup at IISER, Mohali was helpful to identify andquantify the fire emissions and air pollution in North India caused due tostubble burning, he added.

Dr. Rajesh Grover, Director, Pushpa GujralScience City delivering vote of thanks at the occasion said that every year,22nd April is celebrated as "World Earth Day" to increase publicawareness on the environment. He urged the participants that Earth day shouldbe used as a powerful catalyst to involve people in making a difference towardsa healthy, prosperous and sustainable future. The celebration reminds us toprotect the Mother Earth in every possible way.
