US President Joe Biden says ‘Heartbroken’ after deadly attack at US Capitol

"We send our heartfelt condolences to Officer Evans' family, and everyone grieving his loss," the US President said in a statement.

After a deadly attack on police officer who was killedafter a person rammed his vehicle into security barriers at US Capitol onFriday night (IST), a lockdown like situation has prevailed surrounding the USCapitol complex.

This was the second line-of-duty death in the CapitolPolice this year.

Capitol Police officer, Brian D. Sicknick, died a dayafter the January 6 riot staged by supporters of former President Donald Trump.Two other Capitol Police officers have died by suicide in the wake of the riot.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden, who was with First LadyJill Biden at Camp David for the Easter holiday, offered his condolences to thefamily of William Evans, the policeman killed in the attack.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to Officer Evans'family, and everyone grieving his loss," the US President said in astatement.

Another police officer who was injured in the attack is instable condition at a hospital according to authorities. The attack occurredabout 91 metres from the entrance of the building on the Senate side of theCapitol.

Vice President Kamala Harris called the attack "aninexplicable act of violence" and hailed the courage of the Capitol policeshe said that it comes "during a challenging period when they have facedtwo violent and deadly attacks".

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters thatPresident Joe Biden, who landed at Camp David on Friday afternoon to spend theEaster weekend, is "aware" of the Capitol incident.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who hailed the slain officeras a "martyr for democracy", ordered the flags at the Capitol to beflown at half-staff to mourn his death.
