Who is Mahima Kaul? Why did she resign as Twitter public-policy head of India?

Mahima Kaul was the Public Policy director for India atTwitter. She has resigned from her post in January but as per reports she willcontinue to stay at Twitter until March for completing the process oftransition.

Whyso much controversy over her resignation?

There is controversy after her resignation becomes publicbecause the government of India had asked Twitter to withhold some accounts,primarily those who were tweeting about farmers protest, including onemisleading or false hashtag. Twitter, earlier complied with the order but itlater on unwithheld the accounts.

Whythe accounts were unwithheld?

The accounts were unwithheld as per Twitter's rules ofcontent but it did not get down well with the government of India and thegovernment again cautioned Twitter.

Indian government said Twitter is just an intermediaryand all the laws are primarily with it to govern technology. Moreover, as persources, the government cautioned Twitter and its employees that penal actioncould be taken against the company with upto severn years of imprisonment forits employees if it didn't comply with the orders.

However, Twitter turned Nelson's eye to the government'sorders but users of Twitter and international activists and public figures areof the view that Kaul resigned due to such warnings by the government of India.

However,Twittersaid Kaul's resignation is not linked to warnings by Indian government. Kaulwishes to focus on her personal life and cited the same reasons in her resignation.

Monique Meche, a Vice President of Twitter Public Policyin a statement said, ""At the start of this year, Mahima Kaul decidedto step down from her role as Twitter Public Policy Director for India andSouth Asia to take a well-deserved break. It's a loss for all of us at Twitter,but after more than five years in the role we respect her desire to focus onthe most important people and relationships in her personal life. Mahima willcontinue in her role till the end of March and will support the transition."
