The much-awaited horror movie Dies Irae was released on JioHotstar on December 5, 2025. Dies Irae was among the most-awaited Malayali horror movie of the year as it is made by the same team that made cult classic, ‘Brammayugam’, featuring Malayalam superstar Mammootty in the lead.
Directed and Written by Rahul Sadasivan, Dies Irae is based on 'some true events' that revolves around a man named Rohan who starts getting haunted by an unknown entity after his school friend Kani allegedly dies by suicide.

The makers at the start of the movie mentions that Dies Irae which is a latin word of 'Wrath of God' is based on 'some true events'. Since the phrase based on 'some true events' is a big confusing, it is natural that fans try to dig deep into Dies Irae Real Life Case.
Dies Irae revolves around Rohan Shankar who is played by Pranav Mohanlal. Rohan who is the son of a contractor and enjoys luxurious life visit his school friend Kani's house after she dies by suicide.
The catch is Rohan had an affair with Kani and he then ghosted her as she started pressuring him for marriage. Following that, conversation between Rohan and Kani stops. Then one day Rohan gets to know that Kani is dead. Therefore, he visits her house.
Rohan then picks a pin from Kani's room when he visits her house to offer his condolences. And, this is when he invited a ghost inside his house.
Rohan then seeks help of Madhusudhanan who is played by actor Gibin Gopinath. Madhusudhanan is Kani's neighbour.
In the end, it was revealed that Rohan was haunted by ghost of Philip aka Manu who was Kani's neighbour. Philip was the son of a woman (househelp) who used to work at Kani's house. To keep her son Philip alive, she did not give him proper burial and hence his ghost was attached to Kani's belongings, especially her ghunghrus.
Well, Dies Irae is not based on one particular case. Rahul Sadasivan talking to NDTV revealed that that he knows families who have experienced such psychological / supernatural elements.
"It's a very thin line. I took a few such elements from the stories I heard and for cinematic liberty, I had to enhance it and fictionalise it and tell it in a very different way so that it becomes an audiovisual experience," said Rahul Sadasivan.
