The Bengal Files is inspired by the horrific true story of 1946 Great Calcutta Killings aka Calcutta Riots.

For those who are unaware about Great Calcutta Killings, Kolkata then Calcutta witnessed four days communal riots from August 16 to August 19. The Calcutta Riots broke out in the backdrop of 'Direct Action Day' called by Muslim League. It was called to demand a separate Islamic nation i.e. Pakistan.

As per reports, around over 4000 people died in the riots. The exact death toll of Calcutta Riots 1946 is still not ascertained.

As per information available, post the failure of the Cabinet Mission Plan in mid-1946, the All-India Muslim League announced a nationwide protest day. In Bengal, where the League headed the provincial government under H.S. Suhrawardy, August 16 was declared a public holiday in Calcutta.

On August 17, a massacre broke out. Bodies lay on streets by morning; tit-for-tat raids, burnings of homes, shops, and places of worship intensified.

Who was Gopal Patha?

The character of Gopal Patha is played by actor Sourav Das. Gopal Mukherjee was also known as Gopal Patha because his family owned a mutton shop in central Kolkata’s College Street. For the unversed, paantha is goat in Bangla.

Gopal was a leader of one of the major street gangs that were active during the Direct Action Day violence in the city.

Gopal Mukherjee and his group, supposedly comprising more than 800 young men, took it upon themselves to protect Hindus in their area from gangs of Muslim rioters.

As per NDTV, he is often referred to as the man who saved Calcutta from falling to the Muslim League.
