Udaipur Files new release date, row over horrific true story of 'Kanhaiyalal' & all you need to know

The Supreme Court bench Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi refused to extend stay from the film.

After months of uncertainty, the much-discussed film 'Udaipur Files' the revised release date is finally announced. The credit goes to a Supreme Court directive that cleared its last remaining legal and censorship hurdles. 

Who challenged the release of film

The release of the film Udaipur was legally challenged by the Jamiat Uleme-i-Hind’s Arshad Madani. Madani’s plea was made by senior advocate Kapil Sibal in Delhi High court.

The court ruled in favor of senior advocate Gaurav Bhatiya, representing the maker of Udaipur files.

Supreme court's order

The Supreme Court on Friday instructed the Delhi High Court to consider the petitions opposing the centre's clearance for screening Udaipur Files. The Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi bench refused the scope of its stay from the film.

The ruling comes after a precarious path for the film, 'Udaipur Files' A Tailor's Murder Story.

Its release had previously been postponed by long struggles over governmental clearances and objections in front of the censor board.

Udaipur Files is based on

At the heart of this narrative is the true-life horror that shook India in 2022: the barbaric murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal Sahu. On the 28th of June, 2022, Kanhaiya Lal was attacked and killed in his shop by two men, who gave a reason of an imagined disrespect to the Prophet and horrifyingly streamed the act on the internet.

Horror of the incident instigated outrage in an instant, prompted mass protests, imposed a city-wide curfew, and witnessed the National Investigation Agency assuming the case.

Police had arrested a total of 8 individuals, including the prime accused Riyaz Attari and Ghous Mohammed. The arrests were carried out within hours of the offense.

Film makers statement

'Udaipur Files', director Bharat S Shrinate, featuring Vijay Raaz as Kanhaiya Lal reports that the intention is to present this dastardly episode on screens with honesty and sensitivity. 

The movie includes interviews of the victim's family and investigators, not only to repeat the crime but to delve into the reason behind the crime and the destructive effect on family and society.

Director Bharat Shrinate was hopeful of the release, calling it a win for creative freedom as well as the search for truth.

Producer Amit Jani has pointed out that the film was always meant to resonate deeply beyond India, questioning religious intolerance, disinformation, and the imperative for authorities to act on credible threats.

There are anonymous views that states by returning to the killing of Kanhaiya Lal, 'Udaipur Files' keeps alive the promises to make the people's memory live on about one of the most tragic events in recent Indian history, and to reiterate the significance of justice and social harmony in a plural society.

The new release date of the movie is August 8, 2025. Even if the court had directed the opposing party to turn to the court for any discord.
