The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) moved closer to a decisive victory in the Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll, expanding its lead to 11,117 votes after 14 rounds of counting. With the trend consistently favouring AAP since the morning, candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu now appears firmly ahead in the race.
Sandhu’s tally has climbed to 37,582 votes, keeping him well in front of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) contender, who has managed 26,465 votes so far. SAD, which had expected a tighter fight in its stronghold areas, has struggled to catch up as AAP maintained control across key booths.
The Congress remained far behind with 12,809 votes, while Independent candidate Mandeep Singh Khalsa (Waris Punjab De) held his position with 17,052 votes, staying ahead of the BJP, which secured 5,316 votes.
Observers said that the lead began widening noticeably after the 10th round, indicating that rural belt voting patterns had tilted strongly in AAP’s favour. The momentum has boosted confidence among AAP workers gathered at the counting centre, though party leaders say they will wait for the final rounds before making any announcement.
With only two rounds of counting left, the trend suggests that AAP is inching closer to clinching the seat, marking a significant gain for the party in the border district.
