Accused in Bhalla Pind shooting injured in police encounter
Karanbir Singh Karan, the accused in the shooting of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jaswant Singh near Bhalla Pind on the Ajnala-Amritsar main road, was injured in a police encounter on Saturday, September 26. He is currently undergoing treatment.
According to preliminary information, the police received an input that Karanbir was allegedly planning a major criminal activity. Following this, a police team launched an operation to apprehend him.
Police claim accused opened fire during operation
According to the police, Karanbir allegedly opened fire at the police team during the operation, triggering an exchange of fire.
The police retaliated, during which Karanbir sustained gunshot injuries. He was subsequently shifted for medical treatment.
A police personnel was also reportedly injured in the exchange of fire. Further details about the injured officer are awaited.
Accused had escaped from police custody
Karanbir Singh Karan was reportedly among the accused in the September 11 shooting of ASI Jaswant Singh.
The ASI was allegedly shot while travelling towards Ajnala after completing his duty. The incident took place near Bhalla Pind on the Ajnala-Amritsar main road.
Karanbir had reportedly escaped from police custody a few days before the encounter, following which the police had been searching for him.
SSP Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said that two police personnel were injured during the exchange of fire.
One head constable sustained a bullet injury to his thigh, while another police personnel was hit in the chest. However, the latter was wearing a bulletproof jacket, which reportedly protected him from serious injury.
According to the police, a 9mm pistol and the motorcycle allegedly used by Karanbir were recovered from the encounter site.
The accused is currently undergoing treatment, and further details regarding his condition are awaited.
