Police officer shot dead in late-night attack
A shocking incident has once again put the spotlight on attacks against police personnel in Amritsar. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjit Singh, posted at Gate Hakima Police Station, was allegedly shot dead by unidentified assailants while he was on duty.
According to preliminary information, ASI Harjit Singh had reached Bhagtanwala Dana Mandi for night patrol when the attackers struck. Four assailants, reportedly travelling on two two-wheelers, allegedly opened fire at him before fleeing the spot.
Firing carried out at close range
According to the preliminary police investigation, the attackers followed ASI Harjit Singh and fired at him from close range using a .30-bore pistol. A bullet reportedly struck the back of his head/neck.
Police recovered a .30-bore empty cartridge casing and blood stains from the crime scene. Forensic teams are examining the evidence, while the exact cause of death will be established through the post-mortem examination.
CCTV footage being examined
Following the killing, a heavy police deployment was made in the area. Multiple teams have been formed to identify and apprehend the assailants.
Police are scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding area and tracking the movement of the attackers before and after the crime. Forensic experts are also examining evidence collected from the spot.
DGP Gaurav Yadav visits crime s cene
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav visited the crime scene and personally reviewed the ongoing investigation. He also met the bereaved family and expressed his condolences.
After inspecting the crime scene, the DGP said the case was being investigated using professional and technical methods. He expressed confidence that the police would soon make a major breakthrough in the case.
DGP assures strict action against killers
Speaking to the media, DGP Gaurav Yadav assured that those involved in the killing would face strict legal action.
He said the police had deployed multiple teams and were working on CCTV footage, forensic evidence and other technical leads to trace the accused.
Another attack on police personnel in Amritsar
The killing comes amid a series of incidents involving police personnel in the Amritsar region. Earlier, ASI Joga Singh was shot dead in the Majitha area.
In another incident, ASI Jaswant Singh, posted with the Amritsar Police Lines, was allegedly shot in the head by unidentified youths near Bhalla village while he was travelling home. He remains under treatment, with his condition reportedly showing improvement.
The killing of ASI Harjit Singh has once again raised concerns over the risks faced by police personnel while performing late-night duties. The immediate focus of the investigation remains on identifying the attackers, establishing the motive and bringing those responsible to justice.
