Anti-India slogans found on Jan Shatabdi train, Pannu claims responsibility

Security agencies were put on high alert on Wednesday morning after anti-India slogans were found scribbled on a Jan Shatabdi train

Security agencies were put on high alert on Wednesday morning after anti-India slogans were found scribbled on a Jan Shatabdi train. The incident, which sparked panic among passengers and railway staff, has been linked to Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, the US-based chief of the banned organisation Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), who later claimed responsibility through a video message.

The slogans were spotted on coach number NR 257401 of train number 12054, the Jan Shatabdi Express running from Amritsar to Haridwar. According to officials, a railway employee noticed the writings as the train crossed the Beas River and immediately alerted the Jalandhar Government Railway Police (GRP). Gateman Ranjeet Kumar was the first to inform authorities, and the information was quickly relayed to senior officers.

As the train reached Jalandhar, Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and police stopped the coach and took swift action by erasing the slogans with black paint. The incident occurred in coach number 11, prompting officials to conduct a thorough inspection to ensure passenger safety. “The matter was reported without delay, and immediate measures were taken. There is no threat to passengers,” an official said.

The incident has heightened concerns as Pannu, declared a terrorist under India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), has been active in issuing provocative videos and threatening public institutions. His organisation, SFJ, has repeatedly attempted to incite separatist sentiments in Punjab and abroad, often using symbolic acts like graffiti, posters, and social media campaigns.

Passengers expressed unease after learning about the slogans, with many demanding stricter surveillances on trains and stations. The railway management assured the public that additional security checks have been implemented. “We are increasing patrolling and monitoring of trains to prevent such incidents. Passenger safety remains our top priority,” railway officials said.

Police and intelligence agencies are now probing how the slogans were painted on the train and whether there was local involvement. Investigators are examining CCTV footage from nearby locations and questioning staff to trace any suspects.

The incident adds to a series of similar attempts in recent months where separatist elements have targeted public spaces in Punjab to spread fear. With heightened security across stations, authorities have urged passengers to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious immediately.
