Bank to remain closed for 18 days in December month; Check dates

Banks will have regional holidays on various dates such as Dec 1, 3, 12, 18, 19, 20, 22, 24, 25, 26, 30 and 31 in different states and union territories.

Banks will remain closed for a total of 18 days in December, including 4 Sundays, the second and fourth Saturdays, and 12 additional state‑wise holidays notified by RBI.  Despite this, online and digital banking channels, as well as stock‑market trading on most days, will continue to function normally.

December bank closures

According to the RBI‑approved holiday list, banks will have regional holidays on various dates such as December 1, 3, 12, 18, 19, 20, 22, 24, 25, 26, 30 and 31 in different states and union territories.  These holidays are linked to events like State Inauguration/Indigenous Faith Day in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, St. Francis Xavier’s Feast in Goa, regional commemorations in Meghalaya and Chhattisgarh, Losoong/Namsoong in Sikkim, Christmas celebrations in several North‑Eastern states, and New Year’s Eve observances in Mizoram and Manipur.

In addition to these 12 state‑specific holidays, all banks across India will remain shut on four Sundays (7, 14, 21 and 28 December) and on the second and fourth Saturdays (13 and 27 December).  When all these are counted together, bank branches somewhere in the country will not open on 18 days in December, although the exact holiday dates for customers depend on the state where their branch is located.

Plan your branch visits

Customers who need to visit a branch for services like cash deposits above self‑imposed limits, locker operations or certain documentation should plan their visits on working days excluding the notified holidays.  Before going, it is advisable to check the detailed state‑wise list on the RBI or bank’s official website to confirm whether the local branch is open on a particular date.

Online banking will keep running

Even on bank‑holiday dates, digital channels such as UPI, IMPS, NEFT and RTGS, along with debit cards and ATMs, are expected to operate as usual.  This means customers can continue to transfer funds, make payments, and withdraw cash from ATMs without disruption during the December holiday period.

Stock market holiday in December

Equity trading on BSE and NSE will remain open on all weekdays in December except on Christmas Day, December 25, which is a trading holiday across segments.  Apart from this exchange‑declared holiday, trading will naturally not take place on Saturdays and Sundays, so market participants will see nine non‑trading days in the month including weekends and Christmas.
