The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday announced a major reshuffle in its national organisational structure, unveiling a new team of office-bearers under the leadership of newly appointed national president Nitin Nabin.
While the reorganisation includes several senior leaders from across the country, the development carries special significance for Punjab, where former Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal has been appointed as one of the party's 13 national vice-presidents and another notable change for Punjab is the appointment of senior BJP leader Tarun Chugh as the party's Central Office In-charge, a key administrative position within the organisation.
The appointments come at a crucial time, with Punjab among the states scheduled to go to Assembly polls next year. Political observers believe the new team reflects the BJP's attempt to strengthen its organisational network in poll-bound states.
The biggest takeaway for Punjab from the BJP's latest organisational announcement is the elevation of Manpreet Singh Badal to the post of national vice-president.
Manpreet, a former Punjab Finance Minister and nephew of Shiromani Akali Dal patriarch Parkash Singh Badal, joined the BJP after leaving the Congress, and his appointment places him among the party's top decision-makers at the national level. His elevation is being viewed as an indication that the BJP intends to give greater prominence to leaders with political experience in Punjab.
The list of national vice-presidents announced by the BJP includes several prominent names, including former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia, former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat, former BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav, former Union minister D. Purandeshwari, Bharti Pawar and Tariq Mansoor.
Another important organisational change involves Tarun Chugh, one of the BJP's most prominent faces from Punjab, Chugh, who was previously serving as a national general secretary, has now been assigned the responsibility of Central Office In-charge and although he is no longer part of the list of national general secretaries, the new assignment keeps him in an important organisational position.
The BJP's announcement also confirmed that former national general secretaries Arun Singh, Dushyant Gautam and Radha Mohan Agarwal have not been retained in the newly announced team.
Former Union minister Smriti Irani has made a return to the party organisation as one of the eight national general secretaries and the list of general secretaries includes Vinod Tawde, Sunil Bansal, Biplab Kumar Deb, Satish Poonia, Gajendra Patel, Harish Dwivedi and Sanjay Bhatia, meanwhile, RSS leader B.L. Santhosh has been retained as the national general secretary (Organisation), while Shivprakash and Saudan Singh have been appointed as national joint general secretaries (Organisation).
One of the most significant changes in the reshuffle is the appointment of Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal as the BJP's national treasurer and the move has sparked discussions because the BJP has repeatedly emphasised its "one man, one post" principle. Questions are likely to arise over whether Goyal will continue in the Union Cabinet while also holding an important organisational position.
The new organisational structure also stands out because several high-profile leaders do not appear on the list. Former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, whose name had been the subject of speculation in recent weeks, was not included in the newly announced team, Pradhan had recently resigned as Union Education Minister following student protests.
Former Union minister and BJP leader Anurag Thakur has also not been given any position in the new organisational setup.
The latest reshuffle suggests that the BJP is focusing on states that will head into Assembly elections in the coming months. Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have received significant representation in the new team, indicating that the party is preparing early for the next electoral cycle, for Punjab, the appointments of Manpreet Singh Badal and Tarun Chugh are likely to carry political significance. Both leaders are expected to play an important role in shaping the BJP's strategy as the party attempts to expand its political footprint in a state where it continues to face strong competition from regional and national rivals.
