Jalandhar is being closely monitored through a network of 1,107 CCTV cameras installed under ‘Smart City’ project and the surveillance system set up on lines of Delhi and Chandigarh is helping the police enforce traffic rules, issue e-challans and trace people involved in criminal activities.
CCTV cameras have been installed at major intersections across city and are monitored from CCTV control room located at Jalandhar Police Lines and police officials keep watch on activities across different parts of city through these cameras.
According to police officials the cameras are being used to identify traffic violations and issue e-challans and at present challans are being issued for violations detected at four major intersections and people who cross zebra lines or jump red lights are being penalized through e-challan system.
CCTV network has also become an important tool in crime detection and investigation and police officials said the cameras help monitor suspicious activities and provide information about criminals involved in offences and the surveillance system has helped police trace people who try to escape after committing crimes.
The cameras are also used to provide information about road accidents and police authorities said alerts regarding accidents are received through the system allowing quick action when required and the surveillance network also assists SSF force whenever support is needed.
Sub-Inspector Suresh Kumar speaking from CCTV control room at Jalandhar Police Lines said that CCTV cameras have been installed at intersections throughout city under Smart City project and stated that the system is playing an important role in maintaining traffic discipline and supporting law enforcement activities.
According to police around 40,000 e-challans have been issued in Jalandhar so far this year and the fines collected through these challans have resulted in recoveries of approximately ₹5 crore. Police officials have appealed to residents to follow traffic rules and avoid jumping red lights or crossing zebra lines improperly and also said that following traffic regulations can help improve road safety and reduce violations in city.
