Chandigarh is gearing up for the festive rush with a citywide traffic and parking plan, coupled with strict curbs on firecrackers, to keep celebrations safe and organised.

With Dussehra, Diwali and Gurpurab expected to draw large crowds, the administration has lined up 75 temporary parking sites across the Union Territory. These include government office premises, community centres and open grounds that will serve as overflow lots for crowded markets. In addition, 39 school grounds have been made available for evening and holiday parking, giving much-needed relief around major shopping hubs.

For Ramleela and Dussehra functions, special parking zones have been marked near Parade Ground in Sector 17, as well as at venues in Sectors 34 and 46. Traffic diversions will be put in place during dispersal hours, and motorists have been advised to avoid the immediate vicinity of these sites unless attending the events. Police have cautioned that cars left on footpaths, cycle tracks or no-parking stretches will be clamped or towed, with a dedicated helpline (1073) available for assistance.

To prevent encroachments, the Municipal Corporation has directed that festive vendors must seek approvals through the “I Am Chandigarh” mobile app. Stalls will only be permitted at designated locations, and none will be allowed on main roads, footpaths or parking areas.

The UT Administration has also laid down clear rules for firecrackers. Only green crackers are permitted, and they can be used strictly within notified time slots: 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali, 4 am to 5 am and 9 pm to 10 pm on Gurpurab, and during effigy-burning ceremonies on Dussehra. The sale of crackers will be limited to licensed vendors at approved vending sites.

Nearly 300 police personnel will be on duty at 57 Ramleela venues across the city, handling both traffic regulation and security checks. Officials said these steps were aimed at ensuring the festive mood is not dampened by traffic chaos or unsafe practices.

“Our objective is simple — citizens should enjoy the festivities without facing gridlocks or unsafe conditions. With cooperation from the public, these arrangements will make the season more enjoyable for everyone,” a senior traffic officer said.
