Police Case Follows Alleged Harassment, Repeated Advances and Circulation of AI-Generated Obscene Content
A student of Chandigarh University has been booked by Kharar City police after an assistant professor allegedly accused him of persistent harassment, unwanted advances, threats and circulating obscene AI-generated images and videos featuring her.
The case was registered on August 24 following a complaint by the assistant professor. Police have invoked provisions of the Information Technology Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in connection with the allegations.
Trouble Allegedly Began With a Handwritten Letter
According to the complaint, the student, identified as Rajat and enrolled in BECSE-AI ML, allegedly left a handwritten letter for the assistant professor in the staff room on February 12, expressing his feelings for her.
The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of the university's Dean of Student Welfare (DSW).
The professor alleged that Rajat later apologised and assured her that he would not repeat the behaviour.
Alleged Repeated Attempts to Contact Her
The complaint states that the student allegedly resumed attempts to contact the professor through her official email account.
He reportedly sent emails seeking another opportunity to meet her and "sort out" the matter.
Following the alleged misconduct, university authorities suspended the student, according to the complaint.
The professor further alleged that Rajat later returned to the university with his mother and attempted to approach the staff room. Security personnel reportedly intervened and escorted them out.
Professor Alleges Acid Threat
The allegations later took a more serious turn, with the assistant professor claiming that the student had threatened to throw acid at her and disfigure her.
She also alleged that she discovered on August 22 that obscene AI-generated videos and pictures depicting her had been circulated among students and staff through a fake email ID.
The circulation of such digitally manipulated content has added another serious dimension to the complaint.
Police Register Case Under IT Act, BNS
Acting on the professor's complaint, Kharar City police registered a case on August 24.
The FIR invokes Sections 67(A) and 66(E) of the Information Technology Act, along with Sections 78(1), 75 and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The allegations are now subject to police investigation. The case also highlights growing concerns surrounding the misuse of artificial intelligence to create and circulate sexually explicit manipulated content without a person's consent.
Investigation Underway
Police are expected to examine the alleged emails, fake email account, digitally altered content and other evidence as part of the investigation.
The allegations against the student have not been established in court, and the investigation will determine the facts and circumstances of the case.
