AAP-led administration backs SC ruling, launches May 22 drive targeting dangerous stray dogs

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday announced that the Punjab government has launched a major campaign from May 22 to tackle dangerous and aggressive stray dogs posing a threat to children and pedestrians across the state.

Welcoming the Supreme Court’s decision on the issue, the Chief Minister said the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government supports the verdict and has decided to begin a statewide drive against stray dogs considered dangerous to public safety.

In a post on X, CM Mann stated that the Punjab government is committed to protecting citizens, especially children and daily commuters, from attacks by aggressive stray dogs.

The issue had earlier come under the scanner of the Punjab-Chandigarh Human Rights Commission, which on March 10, 2026, took suo motu notice of rising dog-bite incidents in the region. The commission had sought reports from municipal commissioners and the health department regarding cases related to stray dog attacks and public safety measures.

The campaign is expected to involve local municipal bodies and health authorities to address the growing concern over stray dog attacks in urban and residential areas across Punjab.
