Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday met senior Punjab Congress leaders at the party headquarters, Indira Bhavan, to discuss preparations for the November 4 ‘Insaaf Rally’ in Sangrur and the party’s strategy ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal was also present at the meeting, which was attended by Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot, Punjab Congress chief Pargat Singh, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Vijay Inder Singla, among others.
The discussions focused on the proposed rally, the party’s organisational preparedness and its approach towards the upcoming Assembly elections. Rahul Gandhi is expected to attend the Sangrur rally, which will be addressed by senior Congress leaders.
Congress Outlines Its Position on Punjab
Following the meeting, Kharge said Punjab was looking for political change and accused the AAP government of failing to fulfil its promises.
“Punjab is yearning for a decisive change and a transformative new beginning,” he said, citing concerns over governance, corruption, drugs, law and order and public aspirations.
Kharge said the Congress would work towards restoring Punjab’s pride and addressing the concerns of its people.
Venugopal also criticised the AAP government, raising concerns over law and order, the drug menace and corruption. He said the Congress was confident of securing public support in the 2027 elections.
The remarks reflected the Congress leadership’s position on the performance of the state government and its preparations for the next Assembly polls.
Organisational Discussions Focus on Unity
The meeting follows a series of organisational discussions held by Venugopal with Punjab Congress leaders in Chandigarh earlier this week.
Those meetings were attended by Sachin Pilot, Pargat Singh, Raja Warring, Partap Singh Bajwa and Charanjit Singh Channi, besides MPs, MLAs and District Congress Committee presidents.
The discussions focused on strengthening coordination within the state unit and preparing the organisation for the upcoming elections.
Venugopal had emphasised the need for discipline and unity, stating that indiscipline and internal sabotage would not be tolerated, irrespective of a leader’s position.
The party leadership has also maintained that the Congress will contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections under collective leadership, with no individual leader being allowed to run a separate campaign.
November 4 Sangrur Rally in Focus
The proposed Insaaf Rally in Sangrur is expected to be an important event in the Congress’s preparations for the 2027 elections.
The rally is expected to be attended by Rahul Gandhi and addressed by senior party leaders. The Congress is likely to raise issues concerning governance, public welfare and the concerns of various sections of Punjab’s population.
The meeting at Indira Bhavan comes as political parties in Punjab begin preparations for the next Assembly elections.
With the Sangrur rally approaching, the Congress leadership is focusing on organisational coordination, public outreach and developing its political strategy for the coming electoral contest.
