With Independence Day celebrations just a day away, Jalandhar police have intensified security arrangements across the city. Police Commissioner Satinder Singh led a special flag march from Company Bagh Chowk on Thursday, with a large police contingent taking to the streets to review security arrangements and reassure residents.
CP Satinder Singh said special nakabandi and flag marches were being conducted at various locations as part of the Independence Day security plan. Around 150 police personnel participated in the flag march, while additional teams were deployed across the city.
Around 250 additional police personnel have also been called in from outside Jalandhar to strengthen the security arrangements. A major portion of the force has been deployed in the outer areas of the city.
According to CP Satinder Singh, police teams are also conducting checking operations during the night. Special nakas and patrols have been intensified at important and sensitive locations to keep a close watch on suspicious movement.
The police are also investigating threatening emails received ahead of the Independence Day celebrations. CP Satinder Singh said an FIR has been registered regarding a recent email and efforts are underway to identify and arrest the accused.
He added that some suspects had also been detained by Punjab Police in Kolkata in connection with the investigation. The matter is being examined closely to establish the facts and identify those responsible.
Jalandhar police have also held meetings with hotel and restaurant operators and asked them to remain vigilant. Establishments have been advised to properly verify the identity documents of people arriving from outside the city.
Police have urged hotel and restaurant staff to immediately inform authorities if they notice any suspicious person or activity on their premises.
CP Satinder Singh appealed to residents to cooperate with the police during the heightened security arrangements. With additional forces deployed, night checking intensified and surveillance strengthened at key locations, Jalandhar police are maintaining a tight security grid ahead of the August 15 celebrations.
