Bike-borne youths allegedly open fire after argument
A firing incident near a Gujjar dera in Khanowal village of Kapurthala on Monday afternoon triggered panic in the area after a man sustained a gunshot injury.
The injured man has been identified as Rahmat Ali, a resident of Gujjar Dera in Khanowal village. He was rushed for treatment to a private hospital in Jalandhar, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
According to the police, the incident involved two bike-borne youths who allegedly got into an argument with Rahmat Ali before opening fire.
Dispute allegedly started over urinating near dera
According to the statement given by Rahmat Ali's wife to the police, two men arrived on a motorcycle near their dera during the afternoon and allegedly began urinating close to the premises.
She told the police that her husband objected to their act, following which an argument broke out between the two sides.
The woman alleged that during the argument, both youths pulled out pistols and started firing. Rahmat Ali was hit by a bullet during the incident, while the accused allegedly fled from the spot on their motorcycle.
Police recover shell, say three shots fired
DSP Sub-Division Sheetal Singh said the police's preliminary investigation indicated that three rounds were fired at the location.
A spent cartridge shell was also recovered from the scene as part of the investigation.
Police teams reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident and examined the area for evidence.
CCTV footage being examined
SP-D Harinder Singh and DSP Sheetal Singh, along with other police officials, visited the spot and initiated an investigation.
Police are examining CCTV footage from cameras installed in and around the area in an attempt to establish the identities and movements of the two accused.
Case registered against two accused
DSP Sheetal Singh said that a case has been registered at Sadar Kapurthala police station against two accused on the basis of the injured man's wife's statement.
Police teams have been conducting raids at different locations to trace and arrest the accused.
The police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the firing and other aspects of the incident. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
