Following the death of two young men in a road accident on the Police Lines flyover, AAP Jalandhar Cantt Halka In-charge Deepak Bali has said he will approach the Municipal Corporation (MC) to address the issue of sanitation vehicles being parked on roads at night.
Speaking about the accident, Bali said the Municipal Corporation tractor-trolley was parked on the flyover when the Volkswagen car carrying five young men rammed into it around 3 AM on Sunday. Two occupants lost their lives, while the other three survived.
Bali said the two deceased suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot. He also confirmed that five boys were travelling in the car at the time of the accident.
Addressing the issue, Bali said he would speak to the Municipal Corporation and urge officials to avoid parking such vehicles on roads at night, particularly at locations where they could pose a risk to approaching motorists.
He said he would request the MC to ensure that sanitation vehicles are not left parked in a manner that makes them difficult for drivers to spot from a distance.
Bali also suggested installing reflectors on such vehicles wherever required. He said reflectors would help approaching motorists identify a parked vehicle from a distance, especially during nighttime, and get enough time to respond.
His proposed intervention comes after the accident raised concerns about the safety of vehicles parked on roads and flyovers during night hours.
The accident took place around 3 AM on Sunday when a Volkswagen car travelling from BMC Chowk towards BSF Chowk crashed into a Municipal Corporation tractor-trolley parked on the Police Lines flyover.
The five young men were returning home after attending a friend's birthday party.
The deceased were identified as Divit Aulukh, son of Dinesh Aulukh, owner of Punjabi music company Speed Records, and Arav Talwar, son of the owner of Pappi Sweets.
According to the police, the tractor-trolley had been stationed there by sanitation workers engaged in cleaning and garbage collection work.
The three other occupants survived the crash. Police reached the spot after receiving information around 3 AM and initiated an investigation.
Bali's proposed discussion with the Municipal Corporation will focus on preventing similar accidents by addressing the nighttime parking of sanitation vehicles and improving their visibility through reflectors.
