Diwali rush turns ugly! Shopkeepers allegedly assault passerby at Jalandhar’s Phagwara Gate

Amid the rush, a dispute broke out between shopkeepers and a passerby, which eventually escalated into a physical altercation.

A clash broke out between shopkeepers and a passerby at Jalandhar’s busy Phagwara Gate Market, with the entire incident reportedly captured on video. The video, which surfaced on social media on Wednesday, shows several shopkeepers allegedly assaulting a passerby on the road. The footage also captures a traffic jam and commotion in the crowded market.

Diwali rush leads to congestion in market

Phagwara Gate, one of Jalandhar’s busiest commercial markets, has been witnessing increased footfall ahead of Diwali. Several electronics and electrical shopkeepers have reportedly placed decorative items and merchandise outside their shops, further reducing the available space for pedestrians and vehicles.

The situation has reportedly been causing inconvenience to commuters, with people struggling to move through the congested market. Amid the rush, a dispute broke out between shopkeepers and a passerby, which eventually escalated into a physical altercation.

Police begin investigation after video surfaces

Following the incident, SHO Inspector Jagdish Lal of Police Division No. 3 reached the spot along with a police team. He said that the police had downloaded the viral video from social media for investigation.

According to the SHO, the individuals seen in the footage will be identified, and further legal action will be taken after recording the victim’s statement and examining the complaint.

He also pointed out that several people frequently park their two-wheelers on the road, creating traffic obstructions. The police have previously instructed shopkeepers not to place merchandise on roads or allow vehicles to be parked in a manner that disrupts traffic movement.

Police warn against traffic violations

According to information, shopkeepers have maintained that vehicles parked on the road affect their business operations. However, the dispute has raised concerns over the growing congestion in the market and the alleged assault on the passerby.

The SHO has assured that those involved in the altercation will be identified and appropriate legal action will follow. Police have also indicated that strict measures will be taken against those obstructing traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters in the market.
